  1. This is going to be a really long comment, so I do apologise if you feel that this is clogging up the comment section, but one should note here that the most popular names in Japan that you, Abby and Inside Japan brought up are from a survey (by Cookpad Baby), not an official list released by a statistical agency since there isn’t one. Tamahiyo, which is part of Benesse, and Meiji Yasuda Life have both released their own surveys with larger amounts of babies surveyed.

Below are the top 10 for name (with the most common reading) and sound (since 悠真, apart from being read as Yūma, can also be read as Haruma and 大翔 can be read in multiple readings apart from Hiroto) with the combination of surveys from Tamahiyo and Meiji Yasuda Life:

    1. 悠真 Yūma (0.615%) / 葵 Aoi (0.832%)
    2. 湊 Minato (0.525%) / 結菜 Yuina (0.621%)
    3. 大翔 Hiroto (0.512%) / 凛 Rin (0.606%)
    4. 蓮 Ren (0.505%) / 結愛 Yua & 陽菜 Hina (0.577%)
    5. 大和 Yamato & 陽向 Hinata (0.442%) – boy
    6. 結衣 Yui (0.562%) – girl
Yōta (0.38%) – boy

    1. Haruto (2.911%) / Yui (1.679%)
    2. Sōta (1.915%) / Hana (1.672%)
    3. Yūto (1.874%) / Mei (1.628%)
    4. Haruki (1.452%) / Aoi (1.497%)
    5. Yuito (1.348%) / Himari (1.292%)
    6. Sōsuke (1.307%) / Koharu (1.285%)
    7. Riku (1.3%) / Sakura (1.234%)
    8. Yūki (1.155%) / Akari (1.205%)
    9. Hinata (1.148%) / Rin (1.161%)
    10. Yūma (1.113%) / Honoka (1.132%)

By the way, here are the links to the three surveys (all in Japanese) if anyone wants to look at them:
